Chapter 5

Getting Ready

March 21, 2015

Today I found Rufous in another good spot for a photograph, and took some photos that I like even more than my fav photo on March 15th. It had been raining, and the hawks came out during a short clearing to dry off and preen. Here is Rufous all fluffed out to air his feathers.

Examining these photos, I notice that Rufous' eyes have turned very dark, deep red. Perhaps it is only the light, and I will try to get some other photos with full sun. The experts say, however, that Cooper's hawks' eyes change from yellow to orange to red, then deeper red, as they age. Perhaps this very deep red is a sign of Rufous' advanced years.

Jay and I were walking into our front door when our neighbor, Cindy, walked by. We stood talking to her for quite a while. That's when I became aware of the hawks kek-kek-kek-kek-ing away. They were either disturbed by our noisy presence so near their nest, or they were discussing something. Cindy and Jay and I walked into our house to get something. That's when I looked out the window and saw that Roxie was in the cypress tree eating a meal while Rufous watched. She was preoccupied with her meal long enough for me to take a short video:

Hee heeee. You can hear my neighbor (who is from Louisiana) and Jay talking in the background.

Here's another photo of Roxie eating, and then, not wasting any effort, selecting another stick to add to her nest.
